A group of older demonstrators in Portland recently held a musical protest, performing Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.” The event was shared on social media by Congresswoman Maxine Dexter, who posted a video with the message: “This land belongs to all of us. It’s not a war zone—it’s home. Trump can’t take that from us.”
The video drew widespread reaction on Twitter/X, where many users criticized and mocked the protest. Doug Powers commented, “Crosby, Stills, Nash & Definitely Not Young,” while Cernovich wrote, “We shut down the country for two years to save the lives of Boomer shitlibs. One of the greatest crimes of humanity in the 21st century.” Other users described the demonstration as stereotypical and unoriginal.
Stephen L. Miller called it “The twilight of the hippies,” and Nick Searcy remarked, “Every day, all the people who do not live in Portland must get on their knees and thank God that they did not wind up there.” Some responses were more extreme or satirical in tone; for example, Enguerrand VII de Coucy said, “This has upped my desire for military intervention in Portland, now I want them to use The Bomb.”
Dan O’Donnell stated, “There is nothing, and I mean nothing on this planet more cringe than boomer libs,” while Libby Emmons observed that demonstrators waving Ukraine’s flag while singing folk songs suggest everything is fine in Portland.
Other comments focused on stereotypes about Portland or generational divides. Kyle Beckley wrote: “Portland, where diversity is their strength.” Gravantus added: “This video is probably the strongest argument for ending Social Security. Everyone taking part in this needs to get a job.” Old Tory Right commented that Portland had become like every meme from the show Portlandia.
Some tweets also joked about how predictable such demonstrations have become among certain groups. Whale Psychiatrist wrote: “I regret to inform you that the libs are singing again,” and Kevin Tierney said: “If a conservative asked AI to make a video of the most boomer liberal karen singing this land is your land at a protest, you could not have beaten this.”
The protest reflects ongoing divisions over political activism styles and generational participation during Donald Trump’s second term.
