A Halloween display at the home of Maryland Supreme Court Justice Peter Killough has sparked criticism due to its political themes. The display featured signs with messages such as “Here lies the Constitution,” “RIP Freedom of Speech,” “RIP Food Aid,” “Beware Health Insurance Cuts,” “RIP Due Process” and “RIP Climate Science.” These were painted on gravestones and placed in Killough’s yard.
Justice Killough, who was appointed by Governor Wes Moore, is currently presiding over an environmental case. The presence of an environmentalist sign among the decorations has led some to question his impartiality.
A spokesperson for the judiciary told Fox News Digital that the signs belong to Justice Killough’s wife and declined further comment.
Former Arizona Supreme Court Justice Andrew Gould commented on the situation, stating, “He explained that a judge should not be involved in a case after showing that kind of bias. He also explained that it can undermine the trust of the public if a judge shows partiality. It was serious enough where he said that if the judge had these leanings, it would be better to recuse oneself from the case.”
Gould also remarked on a broader trend: “Justice Gould also explained that a lot of these judges are putting their biases on display because they feel they need to oppose President Trump. He said it has become more common in recent years.”
Justice Killough has previously faced scrutiny for decisions made during his tenure as a circuit court judge in 2022, particularly regarding juvenile violence cases. He received criticism for being lenient with offenders, including releasing a 12-year-old who confessed to killing another teen under monitored probation instead of incarceration.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about judicial impartiality amid increasing political division.
