On Monday evening, New York Attorney General Letitia James made her first public appearance since being indicted by a federal grand jury. The indictment, issued last Thursday in the Eastern District of Virginia, charges James with two crimes: bank fraud under 18 U.S.C. Section 1344 and making false statements to a financial institution under 18 U.S.C. Section 1014. The charges are connected to a mortgage loan on property she owns in Norfolk, Virginia.
James took the stage at a rally for New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. Supporters in the crowd chanted “We love Tish!” as she raised her fist. Addressing those gathered, James stated, “We are here tonight because we are ready to turn the page on the cynical, broken, politics of the past.”
She continued, “We see powerful voices trying to silence truth and punish dissent and yes… weaponize justice for political gain.” James also said, “We are witnessing the fraying of our democracy, the erosion of our system of government. This, my friends, is a divine moment in our history.”
The indictment follows James’s high-profile legal actions against former President Donald Trump. She previously filed a lawsuit seeking over $400 million from Trump and attempted to seize his assets.
No further details about the case or upcoming court appearances have been released.
