Governor Kathy Hochul has endorsed Zohran Mamdani, a New York politician known for his socialist views. The endorsement comes amid criticism of Hochul’s approach to state governance, particularly her focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

Hochul’s administration has prioritized DEI policies in education. These measures have included funding programs such as $8 million for race-based teacher recruitment, $250,000 for classroom programming focused on ideology, and $3 million for a regional DEI museum exhibit in the Adirondacks. Critics argue that these allocations divert resources from core academic areas and infrastructure needs.

Under Hochul’s leadership, race, gender, and identity have become significant factors in student treatment, teacher hiring practices, and curriculum development across New York State. Some scholarships and educational opportunities are now reserved for students identified as “underrepresented,” regardless of their individual circumstances or achievements. Teacher selection processes increasingly emphasize demographic quotas over experience or proven ability to improve student outcomes.

Concerns have been raised about academic performance under these policies. Less than half of students in New York State are proficient in reading and math. In New York City schools—where per-student spending exceeds $40,000—academic achievement continues to decline while absenteeism rises and school facilities face ongoing issues.

Despite warnings from the federal government that certain race-based DEI initiatives could jeopardize up to $2 billion in federal education funding for New York State if they conflict with national guidelines on educational equity (https://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/us-department-education-announces-new-guidance-civil-rights-protections-and-federal-funding), Hochul has maintained support for these programs.

“Her choice to preserve DEI ideology over basic academic recovery is sabotage,” states the release.

By endorsing Mamdani—who advocates further reforms along similar ideological lines—Hochul signals continued commitment to this policy direction. The press release concludes: “Hochul didn’t just endorse Mamdani—she paved the way for him.”
