A homicide investigation has begun after a man was found dead at the Burning Man festival in Nevada on Saturday night. The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office reported that the man, described as a white adult, was discovered lying on the ground and deceased after 9 p.m. A participant alerted law enforcement after seeing “a male subject lying in a pool of blood,” according to the sheriff’s office.
The incident occurred while the “Man,” a large wooden sculpture central to the festival in Black Rock City, was burning. Deputies, along with Bureau Land Management rangers and Burning Man Black Rock rangers, secured the area and interviewed witnesses.
Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased individual. NBC News reported:

This year’s event saw tens of thousands gather for music and art activities amid challenging weather conditions. On opening day, high winds exceeding 45 miles per hour caused significant damage to campsites and destroyed structures such as an Orgy Dome. Video shared online showed tents being blown away by strong gusts. Following this storm, heavy rain from a monsoonal thunderstorm turned parts of Black Rock City into muddy terrain.
Last year’s event also saw tragedy when it was reported that a woman died on opening day.
