On Wednesday night, a man fired shots outside the main gate of Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the suspect opened fire and then pointed his gun at security officers stationed at the entrance of the base.
Security personnel responded by shooting the suspect in the leg. Authorities have not released the name of the individual but confirmed that he was transported to a local hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
A spokesperson for Nellis Air Force Base told the Daily Mail that around 12:30 am, “The unknown suspect ‘fired rounds’ at the main gate of the site and was ‘behaving erratically.’” The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police added, “Security officers then ‘challenged the suspect who pointed his firearm at them.’”
Following standard procedures after such an incident, both the Main Gate and Visitor Control Center were temporarily closed. To manage traffic, Simons Gate opened at 5:30 a.m. The base later announced on Facebook that its main gate had reopened Thursday morning.
Nellis Air Force Base is closely associated with Area 51, one of America’s most secretive military locations known for testing advanced aircraft and often linked to UFO rumors.
Area 51 has long been surrounded by speculation regarding its activities due to ongoing military research and testing conducted there.
Last year, President Trump discussed Area 51 and related UFO topics during an interview with Joe Rogan.
