Actor Gary Sinise is contributing to the development of a creative center aimed at supporting American veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Sinise, known for his work both in Hollywood and as an advocate for veterans and first responders, has dedicated years to raising funds and awareness for issues affecting military personnel.
Richard Casper, a former Marine and award-winning advocate, recognized the need for a space where veterans could find support during difficult times. He explained that PTSD symptoms often arise late at night when few constructive resources are available. To address this gap, Casper envisioned a 24-hour facility where veterans could engage in artistic activities such as music, painting, sculpture, and theater. The goal is to provide an outlet for veterans to transform their experiences into creative expression.
Sinise has pledged $1 million through his foundation to help CreatiVets acquire the building for the new center. His involvement also encouraged additional donors to contribute, finalizing the purchase of the property. Sinise said he supports CreatiVets’ mission and referenced similar programs in Chicago that have helped veterans process wartime experiences.
“In the military, you’re trained to do serious work to protect our country, right? If you’re in the infantry, you’re being trained to kill. You’re being trained to contain any emotion and be strong,” Sinise said. He added that while these skills are necessary during service, they can create challenges after returning home if veterans are not taught how to express their feelings.
“Quite often, our veterans don’t want any help,” Sinise continued. “But through art – and with theater as well – acting out what they are going through can be very, very beneficial.”
The new center will provide an alternative environment where veterans can access support around the clock rather than turning to less constructive options at vulnerable moments. More information about Gary Sinise’s involvement with CreatiVets can be found on Twitter and ConnectingVets.
