More than 1.7 million students attended Georgia’s public schools, as stated in the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Enrollment was greatest in elementary levels with 787,206 students (45.9%), followed by middle school at 388,733 students (22.7%), and high school with 539,092 students (31.4%).

Chronic absenteeism continues to challenge Georgia schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students absent for 10% or more of school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. To address this, the department started a statewide initiative offering a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness effort, and focused resources for high-need districts to improve attendance rates.

During 2025, Georgia legislators approved a new law updating school attendance policies, prohibiting expulsions solely based on absenteeism. The law also mandates additional reporting and aligns with programs permitting diploma completion through various alternative methods.

As of 2026, the average student-to-teacher ratio in Georgia was about 14:1, which surpasses the national average of 15:1.
