A large explosion occurred on Friday morning at Accurate Energetic Systems, a military facility located in Hickman, Tennessee. Authorities have confirmed that there are no survivors from the incident, with 16 people dead as a result of the blast.
Accurate Energetic Systems is described on its website as a “women-owned small business.” The company has been operating since 1980 and specializes in the development, manufacturing, handling, and storage of energetic products for both defense and commercial markets. According to its website: “Established in 1980, Accurate Energetic Systems, LLC (AES), proudly holds certification as a SBA Women-Owned small business and stands at the forefront of the energetics industry. We are dedicated to the development, manufacture, handling, and storage of high-quality energetic products utilized in both defense and commercial markets.”
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Helicopter footage captured by WTVF Nashville showed extensive damage to the plant following the blast. Initial reports indicated that several people were missing or unaccounted for. Officials first said there were several deaths but did not specify an exact number; at least 18 individuals were reported missing after the incident.
By Saturday evening, Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis updated the casualty count to 16 after authorities located two individuals who were determined not to be present at the site during the explosion. Sheriff Davis stated: “I can tell you at this time, we have notified all 16 families of those people.” He also noted that efforts were underway to identify victims using rapid DNA testing conducted by personnel from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations (TBI).
Davis explained: “We’re dealing with explosions. And I would say at this time we’re dealing with remains,” adding that it could take days or even months before investigators determine whether foul play was involved. At a news conference held Saturday, he further commented: “Can I say we’re going to rule out foul play? We can’t answer that. That might be days or weeks or months before we can do that.”
Sheriff Davis confirmed all 16 victims’ families had been notified about their loss.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available regarding this fatal incident.
