Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts faced criticism on social media after posting a photo with New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and calling for higher taxes on wealthy Americans. In her tweet, Warren wrote:
“Tax the rich. Billionaire tears not pictured.”
The post drew attention because both Warren and Mamdani come from affluent backgrounds. Publicly available estimates put Warren’s net worth at around $12 million, while Mamdani’s family is reportedly worth $22 million.
Many users responded to Warren’s message by questioning her position on wealth and job creation. Peter Savodnik commented, “Three people who have created a grand total of zero jobs attacking people who have created countless jobs.” Siraj Hashmi added, “This you, Pocahontas?” referencing past controversies about Warren’s claims to Native American ancestry.
Other reactions criticized what some saw as political posturing. Antonio García Martínez posted, “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot worn by people who’ve never had real jobs stomping on your business—for ever.” Sunny wrote, “Yeah the champagne socialist billionaires aren’t crying because they’re too busy cheering.”
One user highlighted the personal fortunes involved: “Elizabeth Warren’s net worth is $12 Million. Zohran Mamdani’s family is worth $22 Million. They’re playing all of you,” tweeted The Persian Jewess.
Additional responses accused Warren and others in her position of being disconnected from ordinary Americans or acting out of self-interest rather than public service. Logan Bowers remarked, “It’s such a disappointment how this has become the objective in and of itself rather than actually doing good things for Americans.” Dick Lucas stated, “Elizabeth Warren and her ilk are looters. They’ve created no jobs. They’ve built nothing. They don’t even care about the poor. They only want to destroy the rich. But only people richer than them.”
Some questioned how Democrats’ approach to wealth might affect their support among technology leaders or entrepreneurs, with Logan Dobson asking, “How did Democrats lose Silicon Valley and the tech community?” Hank Campbell observed that definitions of ‘the rich’ may be relative: “Funny how ‘the rich’ is conveniently set at $1 more than everyone in this photo.”
Warren has long been known for advocating increased taxes on high earners and greater regulation of large corporations.
