The City of Dunwoody will hold its annual Veterans Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. on November 11 at the Brook Run Park Veterans Memorial (4770 N. Peachtree Road). The public ceremony is hosted by Dunwoody Parks and Recreation with support from the Dunwoody/Sandy Springs VFW Post 10822 and Dunwoody Woman’s Club.
“Our Veterans Day Ceremony is an important Dunwoody tradition,” said Dunwoody Mayor Pro Tem John Heneghan, who will give a welcome during the ceremony. “We look forward to the opportunity to express our gratitude to the brave men and women who have sacrificed to defend our country and protect our freedoms.”
Rear Admiral Tilghman Payne, Retired, U.S. Navy, will be the keynote speaker. He spent more than 30 years as a Naval Officer, retiring at the rank of Rear Admiral. Payne served his last assignment as U.S. Defense representative Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Republic of Palau; as commander, U.S. Naval Forces Marianas; and as commander, Joint Region Marianas. His personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (three awards), Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (six awards) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards). Payne is now focused on building our next generation of leaders.
Local students will play an important role in the ceremony. The Dunwoody High School Air Force JROTC will present the colors. The Dunwoody High School Chorus, Band and Orchestra Ensemble will perform the National Anthem and “God Bless America.” Dunwoody Council Member Joe Seconder, Major, US Army, Retired, will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. The Master of Ceremonies will be Dunwoody Police Deputy Chief Mike Carlson, Georgia National Guard Captain (Retired). Dr. Allen Jackson, Senior Pastor of Dunwoody United Baptist Church, will give the invocation during this rain-or-shine event.
