The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is facing ongoing financial challenges as it continues to pay off debt from Kamala Harris’s unsuccessful presidential campaign. Recent reports indicate that the DNC has about $13 million in cash on hand, compared to the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) $84 million.
A significant portion of the DNC’s financial strain comes from covering expenses related to Harris’s campaign, which spent over a billion dollars last fall and ended with millions of dollars in unpaid bills. According to Axios, former Vice President Kamala Harris has tried to assist by allowing the DNC access to her email list for fundraising and holding several small events. However, “But the total money raised from the events has been disappointing,” Axios reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
After Harris lost to President Donald Trump in 2024, some top Democrats voiced concerns about lingering campaign debt. “How do you raise a historic amount of money and not win a single swing state?” one Harris aide told Axios in November, following the election loss. “The honest answer is: I don’t know. It seems we lost the national narrative, and that’s what we need to diagnose.”
Recent donor contributions are reportedly being used primarily to pay down this debt rather than support new party initiatives or candidates. The New York Times reported that Harris concluded her $1.5 billion campaign with $20 million in unpaid bills, which the DNC had agreed to cover without public disclosure.
While political fundraising remains crucial for both parties, current figures show Democrats lagging behind Republicans financially as they continue managing debts from last year’s election cycle.
