Democratic lawmakers are moving forward with plans for a retreat in California’s Napa Valley despite concerns over a possible government shutdown. The event, organized by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), is scheduled for October 13–14 at Hotel Yountville, a five-star resort.
According to an invitation obtained by Politico Playbook, attendees will include Senator Gillibrand, Senator Angela Alsobrooks, and other Democratic legislators. Representative Haley Stevens of Michigan is also expected to participate.
The majority of the retreat will take place at Hotel Yountville, which promotes itself as a “vineyard estate-inspired retreat” offering luxury accommodations, private fireplaces, spa amenities, and vineyard views. Part of the event includes a wine tour and dinner at Staglin Family Vineyards, described as one of Napa’s premier organic winemakers.
As reported by FOX News and the Daily Caller, some have criticized Democrats for holding this event while Congress faces the risk of failing to pass funding legislation before the end of September. If no agreement is reached in time, the government could still be shut down when the retreat takes place.
The DSCC has not commented on whether there are plans to postpone or cancel the gathering if a shutdown occurs.
