DeKalb launches art contest for middle schoolers ahead of World Planning Day

The DeKalb County Planning & Sustainability Department has announced the first World Planning Day Middle School Art Contest. The contest is open to students in grades 6 through 8 who are enrolled in DeKalb County Middle Schools. Participants are asked to submit two-dimensional artwork, no larger than 11 by 16 inches, that addresses topics such as community, sustainability, beautification, and transportation. The theme for this year’s contest is “Think Global, Plan Local,” and students are encouraged to answer the question: “What does community look like to you?”

“Open to all DeKalb County Middle School Students (Grades 6-8).
Artwork must be two-dimensional and no greater than 11″ x 16″.
Artwork should be focused on topics such as community, sustainability, beautification, transportation, etc., while answering the question ‘What does community look like to you?’
Theme: Think Global, Plan Local

Deadline for submissions is Wednesday, October 1, 2025. Submissions will not be accepted after this date.”

Entries are due by October 1, 2025. Winners will have their artwork displayed in advance of and during World Planning Day and will receive a special prize.

In the previous school year (2022-23), enrollment at DeKalb County schools dropped by approximately 2.2% compared to the prior year (Georgia Department of Education). During that same period, there were a total of about 98,287 students enrolled across DeKalb County schools (Georgia Department of Education). White students made up roughly 14% of the county’s student body during that time (Georgia Department of Education).
