DEKALB COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE: Are you the victim of a scam phone call?
0Comments

DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office issued the following announcement on May 6.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is among many sheriff’s offices nationwide getting reports regarding SCAM PHONE CALLS from unknown phone numbers appearing to be the local sheriff’s office. Here’s how the scam works:

• The “scammer” may claim to be a Sheriff’s Deputy or a sheriff’s office employee.

• The scammer may say that there is a warrant for your arrest or that you are subject to arrest for failing to appear for jury duty.

• Then, the scammer offers to help you avoid arrest by paying them a fee using a prepaid money card or gift card.

• They may ask for personal information such as a social security number or bank account information. They have also been known to ask the target to meet them at the sheriff’s office for delivery of the fee that will keep them from being arrested.

THIS IS NOT A LEGITIMATE CALL. IT IS A SCAM.

Here is what you should do:

• First, do not be intimidated or feel threatened.

• Hang Up. Do not have a conversation with the caller.

• Do not give the caller ANY personal or banking information.

• Continue to hang up if they call you back.

You can get jury duty information by calling the DeKalb County Court Jury Services at 404-371-2022.

But remember …. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office will never contact anyone by telephone and ask for personal account information or payment of any kind to avoid arrest or jury duty.

IF YOU RECEIVE A SCAM CALL –

Contact the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office at 404-298-8200.
