DeKalb County opens warming centers as temperatures drop

DeKalb County has announced the activation of warming centers in response to forecasted freezing temperatures and hazardous wind chills. The centers will be open from 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 14, through Wednesday, December 17, 2025.

The following locations will provide shelter during this period: Frontline Response International at 2585 Gresham Rd SE in Atlanta, St. Vincent de Paul at 2050-C Chamblee Tucker Rd in Chamblee, and Exchange Park Intergenerational Center at 2771 Columbia Dr in Decatur. The Mason Mill Recreation Center will not be available for this activation.

To support the early opening time on Sunday, December 14, transportation pickups will begin at 5:00 a.m., with routes starting from Frontline Response Headquarters. This revised schedule is only for Sunday morning; regular evening pickup schedules will resume on Monday night.

Frontline Response International is contracted by DeKalb County to serve individuals during extreme weather conditions. The organization will offer continuous operations throughout the activation period, including hot meals, cots, transportation services, and case management. People seeking assistance can go directly to Frontline HQ beginning at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday.

In other developments within the county’s public sector, enrollment in DeKalb County schools decreased by 2.2% during the 2022-23 school year compared to the previous year (https://www.gadoe.org/). During that same school year, there were a total of 98,287 students enrolled in DeKalb County schools (https://www.gadoe.org/). White students represented the third largest ethnic group among the student body, making up 14% of total enrollment (https://www.gadoe.org/).
