DeKalb County opens warming centers as temperatures drop

DeKalb County will open several warming centers on Friday, December 19, 2025, in response to expected freezing temperatures and hazardous wind chills. The centers will begin operations at 6:30 p.m. Locations include Frontline Response International at 2585 Gresham Rd SE in Atlanta, St. Vincent de Paul at 2050-C Chamblee Tucker Rd in Chamblee, Exchange Park Intergenerational Center at 2771 Columbia Dr in Decatur, and Mason Mill Recreation Center at 340 McConnell Dr in Decatur.

Transportation to the warming centers will be provided from various points across the county. All routes start from Frontline Response Headquarters with initial pickups scheduled for completion by 7:30 p.m. Final sweeps of transportation will continue until 10 p.m., ending promptly.

The pickup schedule is divided into four routes covering North DeKalb/Chamblee-Tucker, Central/Decatur/Emory, East/Stone Mountain/Candler, and South Central/Memorial Dr/Wesley Chapel areas. Specific stops include senior centers, libraries, MARTA stations, Walmart locations, churches, and other community sites.

Frontline Response International is contracted by DeKalb County to provide services during extreme weather events. Individuals can arrive directly at Frontline HQ starting at 6:30 p.m. on Friday for assistance with placement and additional services.

Enrollment data shows that DeKalb County schools saw a decrease of 2.2% in student enrollment during the 2022-23 school year compared to the previous year (https://www.gadoe.org/). The total number of students enrolled was reported as 98,287 for that period (https://www.gadoe.org/). White students made up approximately 14% of the student body during this time (https://www.gadoe.org/).
