DeKalb County opens multiple warming centers amid forecasted freezing temperatures

DeKalb County will open several warming centers on Monday, December 8, and Tuesday, December 9, in response to expected freezing temperatures and hazardous overnight wind chills. The centers will begin operations at 6:30 p.m. each evening.

The following locations will serve as warming centers for residents:
– Frontline Response International, 2585 Gresham Rd SE, Atlanta
– St. Vincent de Paul, 2050-C Chamblee Tucker Rd, Chamblee
– Mason Mill Recreation Center, 1340 McConnell Dr, Decatur
– Exchange Park Intergenerational Center, 2771 Columbia Dr, Decatur

Transportation routes to the warming centers will start from Frontline Response Headquarters at 2585 Gresham Rd SE in Atlanta. Initial pickups are scheduled to be completed by 7:30 p.m., with final sweeps continuing until 10 p.m.

Four transportation routes have been organized:
Route 1 covers North DeKalb and Chamblee/Tucker areas with stops including the North DeKalb Senior Center and Brookhaven MARTA Station.
Route 2 serves Central/Decatur/Emory locations such as East Lake MARTA Station and Emory Decatur Hospital.
Route 3 covers East/Stone Mountain/Candler with stops like Candler Rd MARTA and Stone Mountain Walmart.
Route 4 serves South Central/Memorial Dr/Wesley Chapel areas including Memorial Dr & Columbia Dr Intersection and Wesley Chapel Shopping Plaza Bus Stop.

Frontline Response International is contracted by DeKalb County to provide services during extreme weather events. At their headquarters, individuals can receive hot dinners and breakfasts nightly as well as access beds or cots and case-management services. Transportation from all warming centers to Frontline’s headquarters is available for those who wish to use these services.

Walk-in access is permitted at Frontline Response Headquarters starting at noon on activation days for transportation assistance or placement into a warming center. Recent data shows that enrollment at DeKalb County schools declined by over two percent during the last school year. The district had more than ninety-eight thousand students enrolled in the same period (https://www.gadoe.org/). White students made up fourteen percent of the student body (https://www.gadoe.org/).
