Congressman Brett Guthrie and Congressman John Joyce have announced an upcoming hearing focused on biosecurity issues related to artificial intelligence (AI) and biotechnology. The hearing, titled “Examining Biosecurity at the Intersection of AI and Biology,” is scheduled for December 17, 2025, at the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C. It will be open to the public and streamed online.
The hearing aims to explore how advancements in AI and biotechnology impact biosecurity and risk mitigation efforts. “When it comes to the remarkable advances of AI and biotechnology, it is imperative that we look ahead to ensure these technologies are being used responsibly,” said Chairmen Guthrie and Joyce. They emphasized the importance of oversight in analyzing both risks and benefits associated with AI and synthetic biology.
Dr. Fiona P. Havers will present testimony highlighting concerns about pandemic preparedness in light of new technologies that could potentially create or modify pathogens with pandemic potential. She expressed concern that despite experiences with COVID-19, the U.S. may be less prepared now than at the beginning of the pandemic due to staffing cuts, shifts away from evidence-based vaccine policies, and reduced funding for scientific research.
