This week on CNN, host Abby Phillip discussed the potential impact of former President Donald Trump’s Middle East policy during a panel conversation. Phillip acknowledged that if Trump is able to broker an end to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, it would represent a significant achievement for him.
“If President Trump is able to [end the war between Israel and Hamas] this is a major — a major victory for him,” Phillip said.
Panelist Alencia Johnson responded, “It is challenging to actually hear that piece of Trump being potentially the one to get the ceasefire deal.” She added, “A lot of people are tired of the devastation that is happening to the Palestinian people, and so how do we figure out a way — a path forward?” Johnson continued, “I would be interested to understand President Trump’s interest in this because he has said some things that are very harmful to the Palestinian people. I don’t know what his motivations are.”
The discussion took place as reports emerged that Hamas has agreed in principle to release all Israeli hostages—alive or dead—provided certain conditions for exchange are met. According to statements from Hamas, the group expressed willingness to negotiate through mediators on President Trump’s proposed peace plan for the region. In its statement Friday, Hamas affirmed its readiness “to immediately enter into negotiations through the mediators to discuss the details of this agreement.” The group also indicated support for transferring administration of Gaza to an independent Palestinian body based on national consensus and regional backing.
Trump’s 20-point peace plan was outlined earlier in the week at an event at the White House with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The plan reportedly includes proposals aimed at ending hostilities and addressing humanitarian concerns in Gaza.
