Former President Barack Obama has drawn attention for a recent social media post about the Middle East peace deal that did not mention former President Donald Trump. The omission was highlighted by CNN anchor Abby Phillip, who said on air that Obama should have acknowledged Trump’s role in brokering the agreement.
Obama’s tweet addressed the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza, expressing hope for an end to hostilities and the reunification of hostages with their families. He wrote: “After two years of unimaginable loss and suffering for Israeli families and the people of Gaza, we should all be encouraged and relieved that an end to the conflict is within sight; that those hostages still being held will be reunited with their families; and that vital aid can start reaching those inside Gaza whose lives have been shattered. More than that, though, it now falls on Israelis and Palestinians, with the support of the U.S. and the entire world community, to begin the hard task of rebuilding Gaza – and to commit to a process that, by recognizing the common humanity and basic rights of both peoples, can achieve a lasting peace.”
Donald Trump Jr. responded to Obama’s statement on social media by adding: “I’ll finish it for you. ‘Thank you, Donald Trump’.”
Abby Phillip discussed this exchange during CNN’s Table for Five program. She commented: “Honestly, it’s not unfair to say, if President Obama is going to write a whole post about a peace deal, maybe he should acknowledge the president who brokered it.”
The discussion comes after reports confirmed that President Trump played a key role in negotiating an agreement between Israel and Hamas.
