Chamblee High School senior Owen Tang has been awarded an Honorary Merit Scholarship by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, according to an April 22 announcement.
The scholarship is part of the Corporate-Sponsored Merit Scholarship program and recognizes students whose educational plans or other awards preclude them from receiving a monetary scholarship. Tang was selected as one of many students nationwide from the finalist level of the National Merit Scholarship competition.
Most Merit Scholarships are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study and provide annual stipends ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 per year. Some scholarships offer a single payment between $2,500 and $10,000.
“We are incredibly proud of Owen Tang and his outstanding achievement in earning this Honorary Merit Scholarship. His dedication to academic excellence, leadership, and service reflects the very best of Chamblee High School and the DeKalb County School District,” said Dr. Norman C. Sauce III, Interim Superintendent of Schools for DeKalb County School District. “Owen’s success is a testament not only to his hard work but also to the unwavering support of his educators, family, and peers. We look forward to seeing all that he will accomplish in the future.”
To qualify for a National Merit Scholarship, high school juniors must take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which serves as an initial screening tool for program entrants. Semifinalists are required to complete a detailed scholarship application that includes an essay and information about extracurricular activities, awards received, and leadership positions held. In addition to having an outstanding academic record endorsed by a high school official, semifinalists must also earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm their qualifying test performance.
