During a recent episode of Bill Maher’s podcast, filmmaker Rob Reiner discussed the approach Democrats should take when engaging with Republicans. The conversation took place after Reiner’s return to public appearances following the 2024 election.
Maher suggested that Democrats need to find ways to communicate and work with Republicans. In response, Reiner argued that such dialogue should only occur if certain preconditions are met. “You’re right. But here’s the thing. Let’s say we’re going to have that argument. You’re going to try to talk to somebody and you have a point of view,” Reiner said. “The other person has a point of view. Before you have the exchange, you have to agree on certain facts.”
Maher disagreed with this approach, stating, “No, you don’t,” and adding, “You can’t … You just have to talk to people.”
The discussion was highlighted in a video clip shared by journalist Jason Cohen on social media.
The exchange comes at a time when Democrats do not hold significant power in government, making strategies for bipartisan communication an ongoing topic of debate.
