During the 2024-25 school year, Sequoyah Middle School had 16 American Indian or Alaska Native students enrolled, representing a 5.9% decrease from the prior year, state education department data shows. The report comes from the Georgia Department of Education.

The overall student population at Sequoyah Middle School totaled 1,696 for 2024-25. Of that, American Indian or Alaska Native students comprised 1%, placing them among the smallest demographic groups in the school.

The school falls under the jurisdiction of the DeKalb County School District, which has its central office located in Decatur.

Out of the 129 schools in DeKalb County School District, Chamblee Charter High School had the highest number of American Indian or Alaska Native students during 2024-25, registering 18 enrolled students.

The National Center for Education Statistics reports that Georgia’s public school student population is comprised of approximately 36.4% Black, 35.9% white, 18.1% Hispanic, 4% Asian, 4.6% multiracial, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.1% Pacific Islander.

Chronic absenteeism after the pandemic continues to be a challenge in Georgia, with the education department recording that 20.7% of students missed at least 10% of school days in 2024. Measures were put in place by GaDOE through a statewide campaign, which includes a live attendance dashboard, expanded public outreach, and assistance for districts with the highest need in improving attendance rates.

In 2025, a new bill updated Georgia’s school attendance laws, prohibiting expulsion for absenteeism alone. It also introduced additional reporting protocols and aligns with alternative completion pathways for student diplomas.

By 2026, Georgia’s student-to-teacher ratio averaged 14:1, compared with the national figure of 15:1.
