Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic candidate for governor in Virginia, stated in a recent interview that she would not work with President Donald Trump on job creation if elected. Speaking to PBS NewsHour, Spanberger said, “I think that, you know, you don’t work with the arsonist who burns down the house to rebuild it. And in this particular case, the individual who’s responsible for an absolute attack on the federal workforce is not the right person to help rebuild our economy.” Spanberger previously represented Virginia’s 7th Congressional District from 2019 to 2025.
The question about bipartisan cooperation came from PBS reporter Liz Landers, who asked whether Spanberger would be willing to collaborate with Trump on issues such as job creation. In response, Spanberger made clear her refusal by saying simply: “No.”
Winsome Earle-Sears, the Republican candidate for governor, responded to Spanberger’s remarks on social media. Earle-Sears posted: “When your hatred for President Trump outweighs your love for Virginians… you’re not fit for office.” She also stated: “As your Governor, I will work with anyone to strengthen our economy.”
Spanberger’s comments have drawn attention as both candidates highlight their positions regarding working across party lines and prioritizing economic development.
