Georgia enrolled over 1.7 million students in its public education system, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Elementary school enrollment was highest at 787,206 students (45.9%), with middle school enrollment at 388,733 (22.7%) and high school at 539,092 (31.4%).

Chronic absenteeism has continued to challenge Georgia’s schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education reported. In an effort to address this, the GaDOE started a statewide initiative featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, awareness campaigns, and focused resources for high-need districts to encourage daily participation.

Georgia legislators passed a measure in 2025 revising school attendance rules to prohibit expulsions based only on absenteeism. The legislation also includes new reporting guidelines and supports diploma programs through alternative pathways for students. Details can be found here.

Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio in 2026 was about 14:1, according to state-level data, which is slightly better than the national average of 15:1.
