According to the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report, over 1.7 million students attended public schools across Georgia. Chronic absenteeism continues to be a serious concern in Georgia schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of instructional days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. The department responded with a statewide plan that features a real-time attendance dashboard, increased public outreach, and additional support for districts with high needs to encourage consistent attendance. In 2025, Georgia legislators revised attendance regulations to prohibit expulsion solely due to absenteeism. The update also established new reporting protocols and incorporated initiatives that enable students to complete diplomas through alternative pathways.

As of 2026, Georgia reported an average student-to-teacher ratio of roughly 14:1, which is lower than the national figure of 15:1, according to Public School Review.
