Chronic absenteeism continues to pose challenges for Georgia schools since the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. In response, GaDOE introduced a statewide strategy featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, public awareness efforts, and specialized support in high-need districts to raise attendance rates.
In 2025, Georgia enacted legislation to revise its school attendance policies, prohibiting expulsions based solely on absenteeism. The updated law also includes new reporting obligations and coordinates with pathways that let students earn diplomas through alternate means.
For 2026, Georgia’s average student-teacher ratio stood at about 14:1, an improvement over the national average of 15:1.
